about

Patrick Stevens and Evelyn Tremble were making music (if you can call it that) since the early 1970s. They were known for their erratic tape experiments juxtaposed with Pat's bizarrely manipulated guitar. using his own home-built effect units, and Evelyn's enormous modular synthesizer, which he had acquired through questionable means. Their noteriety preceded their desperate flight into the Canadian wilderness in order to avoid the draft. In their woodland cabin, they perfected a sound that was equal parts melodic bliss and anxiety-inducing drones: a cacophonous whirlwind of noise that would often leave the listener with feelings of manic schizophrenic amnesia. Their performances were mostly limited to the psychedelic sex clubs in the Windsor and Detroit underground. It was here that Ron Day (a student of the school of music at the University of Michigan) and his wife, Cindy Walker (a prolific punk drummer in her own right) saw a performance of Pat and Eve's audio mania. After a chilly late October show, the four discussed Italian Futurism and Maoist Third-Worldism, and the cosmos aligned. Ron convinced Pat and Eve to move back to America under false identities to live in his makeshift home studio in order to create what was later deemed "the album too dangerous for North American release." While the LP contained original songs, there was so much sampled material under then-current copyright domain that no North American label would dare release it, despite its overwhelming praise from the New York and Eastern European punk communities: most of the English-speaking world would have to acquire their copies through Portuguese, Polish, or Malaysian bootlegs. After a santized CD re-master in the early 1990s, Cream Over Misery is now proud to present, in its intended and unadulterated form: Chronophasia.
